PRINCETON, NJ -- With Labor Day approaching, a new Gallup poll finds that one in four workers -- 24% -- say that if they could do so, they would fire their boss. Overall, the vast majority of Americans -- 86% -- say they are satisfied with their jobs, but among those who are not satisfied, more than half say they would fire their boss. Even among those who are satisfied with their jobs, 20% would still give their boss the ax.

While winning the lottery is the dream of millions of Americans who participate each week, six in ten workers say that even if they won 10 million dollars they would still continue to work. However, just 35% of workers overall would continue at the same job, while another 24% would find some other endeavor. Four in ten American workers say they would simply quit.

Among those who say they are satisfied with their jobs, 39% say they would continue with it even after winning the lottery; just 4% of the dissatisfied group would continue.

METHODOLOGY
The current results are based on telephone interviews with a randomly selected national sample of 1,014 adults, conducted August 22-25, 1997. Among this group, 616 are employed either full-time or part-time. For results based on this sample of "workers," one can say with 95 percent confidence that the error attributable to sampling and other random effects could be plus or minus 4 percentage points. In addition to sampling error, question wording and practical difficulties in conducting surveys can introduce error or bias into the findings of public opinion polls.
