The Gallup 2016 Survey of K-12 School District Superintendents

Understanding Perspectives on Public Education in the U.S.: Gallup developed this research study of K-12 superintendents of public school districts in the U.S. to understand their opinions on important topics and policy issues facing education.

Superintendents are most likely to rate high school graduation rates, student engagement and student optimism about the future as important elements in evaluating school effectiveness.

Superintendents see room for improvement in some critical areas that promote educational success. Less than half of superintendents report that their district is very effective at recruiting and retaining talented teachers. Only a quarter of superintendents believe their district is very effective at engaging parents in their child's education.

This survey represents the views of superintendents nationwide.

Two-thirds

of superintendents say their district is "very effective" at providing a quality education to students.

Gallup data show:

43%

of superintendents say their school is very effective at recruiting and retaining talented teachers.

Superintendents in suburban districts are much more likely than those in non-suburban districts to believe their school is very effective at recruiting and retaining talented teachers.

Only 23%

of superintendents say their district has been very effective at engaging parents with their child's school.

83%

of superintendents think a welcoming school environment is "extremely important" to making sure parents are engaged with their child's school.

Only 46%

of superintendents think appropriate discipline policies are "extremely important" to making sure parents are engaged with their child's school.

Ensuring students, teachers and parents are engaged at school is a priority for all superintendents
