Americans applauded John F. Kennedy's job performance after the failed Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba, but they showed modest to little interest in further efforts to remove Fidel Castro from power. Most supported a trade embargo.

President Barack Obama announced on Wednesday a blockbuster shift in U.S. foreign policy -- for the first time in half a century, the U.S. and the island nation of Cuba, run by the long-time Communist government under the control of the Castro family, will take major steps toward normalizing diplomatic relations.
