Gallup Daily: Early June Consumer Views Look Like May's

Based on polling conducted May 29, May 31 and June 1, 2008

PRINCETON, NJ -- Consumer attitudes at the transition from May to June closely match those seen throughout May. In the last three days of Gallup Poll Daily tracking, spanning May 29 through June 1, 18% of Americans rate current economic conditions "excellent" or "good" while 43% call them "poor." The average ratings for May 1 through May 31 were 16% excellent/good and 43% poor. -- Lydia Saad

Americans' outlook for the economy is identical to that seen in May. Only 10% believe economic conditions are getting better while 86% say they are getting worse.

Survey Methods

For the Gallup Poll Daily tracking survey, Gallup is interviewing no fewer than 1,000 U.S. adults nationwide each day during 2008. The economic questions analyzed in this report are asked of a random half-sample of respondents. The results reported here are based on combined data from 1,524 interviews conducted May 29, May 30 and June 1, 2008. For results based on this sample, the maximum margin of sampling error is ±3 percentage points.

Interviews are conducted with respondents on land-line telephones (for respondents with a land-line telephone) and cellular phones (for respondents who are cell-phone only).

In addition to sampling error, question wording and practical difficulties in conducting surveys can introduce error or bias into the findings of public opinion polls.
