PRINCETON, NJ -- Al Gore is better looking than George W. Bush. He is also smarter. On the other hand, Bush is the better public speaker, and has the better sense of humor. Both men would be equally fascinating to have dinner with.
Those are the results from this past weekend's poll of Americans, asking them to choose between the two candidates on these five dimensions.
There are interesting differences by gender. Women are generally more likely to support Al Gore in this election than are men, and are more likely than men to choose Gore over Bush on each dimension. The only dimension on which women and men are closer in agreement is the "smarter" quality, on which there is a much smaller difference in the votes of the two genders.

Survey Methods
The results are based on telephone interviews with a randomly
selected national sample of 1,019 adults, 18 years and older,
conducted August 24-27, 2000. For results based on this sample, one
can say with 95 percent confidence that the maximum error
attributable to sampling and other random effects is plus or minus
3 percentage points. In addition to sampling error, question
wording and practical difficulties in conducting surveys can
introduce error or bias into the findings of public opinion
polls.
