Coretta Scott King, civil rights leader and widow of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., has died. She was a woman of some note in the eyes of the American public. Though Gallup never asked any specific questions about her, she did frequently appear in Gallup's annual list of the Most Admired Women, placing in the top 10 eight times.
Her first appearance was in 1968, following the assassination of her husband, when she ranked fifth, her highest rating ever. She also appeared in the top 10 in 1970, 1972, 1974, 1979, 1984, 1986, and 1987. Though she has not ranked in the top 10 since 1987, she has been mentioned by at least some Americans in most years since then, including in the December 2005 poll.
