The Current State of Well-Being in the U.S. Military

The Current State of Well-Being in the U.S. Military

On May 13, 2010, at its world headquarters in Washington, D.C., Gallup shared new research on an important topic for the country -- the well-being of U.S. active duty military personnel, veterans, and their families. The Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index gathered data on these vital groups for more than two years. The data demonstrate that non-deployed active duty military personnel enjoy surprisingly high well-being compared with the veteran and civilian population.

Gallup well-being researchers provided analysis and participants heard insightful observations from the Defense Centers of Excellence and Military Child Education Coalition. This interactive discussion addressed what the military is doing to increase well-being among its service members and to reduce incidence of suicide. It also compared the life evaluation, physical health, and emotional health of both active duty military personnel and veterans with the entire adult U.S. population.
