PRINCETON, NJ -- President George W. Bush's latest job approval rating from the American people remains where it has generally been for the last three months -- in the mid-30s. According to the Dec. 11-14 Gallup Poll, 35% of Americans now approve of the job Bush is doing while 61% disapprove.
Bush's approval rating has seesawed in a fairly narrow range during 2006. It averaged 40% in the first three months of the year, dipped to 35% from April through June, recovered to 40% over the summer, and has been down again to 36% since October.
Demographic Patterns Hold Steady
Bush's current levels of support from various demographic and political subgroups are generally consistent with where these subgroup ratings have been for the past three months.
Bush continues to earn higher approval from men than from women: 43% vs. 28% in the latest poll. Since October, Bush has averaged 40% approval from men and 33% from women. This gender gap reflects the more fundamental political difference between the genders, which is that women tend to be more Democratic in their political affiliation than are men.

The same pattern is seen regarding race: Whites are more positive about Bush than is the much more Democratic-oriented nonwhite population (39% vs. 22%).
Current approval of Bush by age is similar to the October-December average by age. The Dec. 11-14 poll shows Bush receiving the most support from middle-aged adults (39% from those aged 30 to 49) and somewhat lower support from those aged 18 to 29 (29%) and 50+ (33%).
Throughout his presidency, Bush has typically received higher ratings in the South and Midwest than in the East and West. That pattern is maintained in the current poll, in which his approval score is about 40% in the Midwest and South but below 30% in the West and East.
Roughly 8 in 10 Republicans approve of the job Bush is doing, compared with only 3 in 10 independents and fewer than 1 in 10 Democrats. Bush's latest approval scores by party are nearly identical to his averages among these groups for the past three months.

Survey Methods
Results are based on telephone interviews with 1,010 national adults, aged 18 and older, conducted Dec. 11-14, 2006. For results based on the total sample of national adults, one can say with 95% confidence that the maximum margin of sampling error is ±3 percentage points. In addition to sampling error, question wording and practical difficulties in conducting surveys can introduce error or bias into the findings of public opinion polls.
