The Donald vs. Rosie: Americans Rate the Feuding Celebrities

Americans more negative toward O'Donnell than Trump

PRINCETON, NJ -- It seems there is a new twist and even nastier mudslinging almost every day in the ongoing feud between Rosie O'Donnell and Donald Trump. A recent USA Today/Gallup poll finds that Americans rate both celebrities more negatively than positively, but O'Donnell is rated much more negatively than Trump. Less than half of Americans have an unfavorable opinion of Trump, while more than 6 in 10 have an unfavorable opinion of O'Donnell. Women have essentially the same opinion of both celebrities, but men are much more negative in their ratings of O'Donnell. Younger men view Trump most positively, while younger women view O'Donnell most positively.

Overall Results

The Jan. 5-7 poll asked Americans whether they have a favorable or unfavorable opinion of O'Donnell and Trump. Fewer than 3 in 10 Americans (28%) say they have a favorable opinion of The View co-host, while a solid majority of Americans (63%) say they have an unfavorable view of her. Trump's ratings are more positive, but still negative overall, with 41% rating him favorably and 48% unfavorably.

O'Donnell had a similar favorability rating last summer, but Trump's ratings have fluctuated across the four times Gallup has asked Americans to rate him over the past eight years. In September 1999, Trump's ratings were similar to his current ratings, but by October 1999, his ratings plummeted, with a 33% favorable and 58% unfavorable ratings. Trump's ratings were the most positive in 2005, when half of Americans rated him favorably and 38% rated him unfavorably. 

Ratings of O'Donnell and Trump Vary by Gender and Age Groups

Men are evenly divided in their views of Trump, with 44% rating him favorably and 45% unfavorably. But, men are overwhelmingly negative in their assessment of O'Donnell. Just 21% of men have a favorable opinion of O'Donnell, while the vast majority -- 70% -- have an unfavorable opinion of The View co-host.

Women essentially rate O'Donnell and Trump the same, and both are viewed more negatively than positively. O'Donnell's ratings are 34% favorable to 56% unfavorable among women, while Trump's ratings are 38% favorable to 50% unfavorable among women.

Americans under age 50 are more positive than those aged 50 and older in their assessment of both celebrities, but O'Donnell is rated more negatively than Trump by both age groups. Forty-five percent of adults aged 18 to 49 rate Trump favorably, compared with 32% who rate O'Donnell favorably. Among those aged 50 and older, 36% have a favorable opinion of Trump, and 23% have a favorable opinion of O'Donnell.

O'Donnell and Trump are rated most positively among younger adults of their same gender and most negatively among older adults of their opposite gender.

Older men (aged 50 and older) view O'Donnell more negatively than do younger men or women of any age. Similarly, women aged 50 and older rate Trump more negatively than do younger women or men of any age. Favorability ratings for Trump are highest among younger men, and ratings of O'Donnell are highest among younger women.

Survey Methods

Results are based on telephone interviews with 1,004 national adults, aged 18 and older, conducted Jan. 5-7, 2007. For results based on the total sample of national adults, one can say with 95% confidence that the margin of sampling error is ±3 percentage points. In addition to sampling error, question wording and practical difficulties in conducting surveys can introduce error or bias into the findings of public opinion polls.
