House Republicans (and three Democrats) on Wednesday voted to repeal President Obama's healthcare law and on Thursday launched efforts to replace numerous parts of the legislation.
While full repeal of the law is unlikely as long as Democrats remain in control of the Senate and the White House, Republican lawmakers can attempt to cut funding to parts of the bill and eliminate or replace elements of the legislation.
Whether Republicans are successful in striking down all or part of the healthcare law or if the bill stays as is, Americans will be affected, particularly those who are uninsured.
Gallup this week published new data on the uninsured in America. Here are the highlights:
- 16.4% of American adults were uninsured in 2010, on par with 2009, but up from 14.8% in 2008
- 45.8% of adults in the U.S. had employer-based healthcare last year, down from 46.8% in 2009
- 25.3% of American adults got their healthcare from the government in 2010, up from 24.6% in 2009
- 38.9% of Hispanics were uninsured in 2010, more than any other group
- 29.7% of low-income Americans and 28.0% of 18- to 26-year-olds were uninsured in 2010
- 3.1% of seniors and 4.7% of high-income Americans were uninsured last year, making them among the least likely to be without healthcare
