Gallup Daily: Tracking Consumer Confidence

Based on polls conducted Feb. 3-5, 2008

PRINCETON, NJ -- According to Gallup Poll Daily tracking of Americans' economic attitudes, just 22% of the public believes economic conditions are currently "excellent" (3%) or "good" (19%). That ties for the lowest percentage rating the economy in positive terms since the tracking program began in early January, and is down significantly from the 30% who rated conditions positively in the initial tracking results. One in three Americans describe economic conditions as poor.

Seventy-nine percent of Americans believe the economy is getting worse, while only 14% say it is getting better. For about a week in mid- to late January (from Jan. 16-18 polling through Jan. 25-27 polling), at least 8 in 10 were pessimistic about the economy's direction, and that level could well be reached again after showing slight improvement in more recent days.

Taking results of the current conditions and getting better/worse questions together, only 9% of Americans have a positive outlook on the economy -- believing that current conditions are either excellent or good, and that the economy is getting better or staying the same. Sixty-eight percent have a negative outlook. -- Jeff Jones

Methodology: The results reported here are based on 1,452 interviews conducted Feb. 3-5, 2008. For results based on this sample, the maximum margin of sampling error is ±3 percentage points. In addition to sampling error, question wording and practical difficulties in conducting surveys can introduce error or bias into the findings of public opinion polls.
