PRINCETON, NJ -- For the second consecutive year, Americans have selected Julia Roberts as their Favorite Motion Picture Actress in the 27th annual People's Choice Awards, presented last night (1/7) in Los Angeles. Mel Gibson took top honors as Favorite Motion Picture Actor among Americans over the age of 12, and was also honored as the public's Favorite Star in a Dramatic Motion Picture for his role in "The Patriot."

Other repeat winners include "Friends" as the public's Favorite TV Comedy Series, "ER" as the Favorite TV Drama Series, and Drew Carey as Favorite Male TV Performer for his role on "The Drew Carey Show."

The Gallup Organization conducts the annual survey of Americans for the People's Choice Awards. Unlike many other Hollywood awards determined by entertainment writers or those involved in the entertainment industry, the winners of the People's Choice Awards were selected directly in telephone polls conducted by Gallup during November and December 2000.

"The Green Mile" Named People's Choice as Favorite Dramatic Motion Picture
The Tom Hanks prison film was also a hit with critics, winning an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture last year. Hanks was also nominated for Favorite Motion Picture Actor by the public, along with Denzel Washington for his role in "Remember the Titans." On the comedy front, Ben Stiller's "Meet the Parents" was named Favorite Comedy Motion Picture, while Jim Carrey was named Favorite Star in a Comedy Motion Picture.

Aniston, Goodman, Midler Named Favorite TV Performers
In addition to her show's victory as Favorite TV Comedy Series, "Friends" star Jennifer Aniston took top honors as Favorite Female TV Performer. Aniston defeated last year's winner, Calista Flockhart.

Among this year's crop of actors on new TV shows, John Goodman and Bette Midler were selected as favorite performers.

Country, Pop Square Off in Musical Categories
Last year, the American public's favorite musical artists were Ricky Martin, Shania Twain, and the Backstreet Boys.

This year, the Favorite Male Musical Performer goes to Garth Brooks, while Faith Hill was named the Favorite Female Musical Performer. *NSYNC is the people's choice as the Favorite Musical Group, defeating the Dixie Chicks and Alabama.
