The following graphs display Gallup's full trends on U.S. views about abortion by gender.

  • The first set of graphs provides views since 1975 about the legality of abortion.
  • The second set of graphs displays men's and women's self-identification since 1995 as "pro-choice" vs. "pro-life" on the abortion issue.

Trends in Views on Legality of Abortion, by Gender

Line graph. Fifty percent of women in 2019 say abortion should be legal only under certain circumstances.

Line graph. Fifty-six percent of men in 2019 say abortion should be legal only under certain circumstances.

Line graph. 24% of women and 25% of men in 2019 say abortion should be legal under any circumstances.

Trends in Preferred Abortion Label, by Gender

Line graph. 43% of women in 2019 identify as pro-choice and 51% identify as pro-life.
