The following graphs display Gallup's full trends on U.S. views about abortion by gender.

  • The first set of graphs provides views since 1975 about the legality of abortion.
  • The second set of graphs displays men's and women's self-identification since 1995 as "pro-choice" vs. "pro-life" on the abortion issue.


Trends in Views on Legality of Abortion, by Gender

Line graph. Forty-six percent of women in 2018 say abortion should be legal only under certain circumstances.

Line graph. Fifty-four percent of men in 2018 say abortion should be legal only under certain circumstances.

Line graph. Thirty-one percent of women and 27% of men in 2018 say abortion should be legal under any circumstances.

Trends in Preferred Abortion Label, by Gender

Forty-eight percent of women in 2018 identify as pro-choice, while 47% identify as pro-life.
